Tuvalu General Election process begins

Notice of General Election.

Funafuti, Tuvalu (13 June, 2019): The Tuvalu parliamentary four-year term is coming to an end and the government has begun the general election process, coordinated by the Office of Elections in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Mr. Tepaukie Sotaga, Deputy Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and Assistant to the Secretary to Government as Commissioner of Elections, said the process begun on Friday June 7th following the signing of the Notice of General Election by the then Acting Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Maatia Toafa on the same day.

Along with the Notice of General Election, Ag. Prime Minister also signed and approved the appointment of Revising Officers and Registration Officers for each electoral district.

Mr. Sotaga said, “The process begins with the registration of electors or voters in 21 days from June 7th to July 9th 2019, for electors 18 years and above. Eligible electors who are out of Tuvalu during this initial registration period can register from August 21st to 27th.”

According to Mr. Sotaga, public announcements on Radio Tuvalu have also begun in which he and Acting Attorney General Ms. Corinna Ituaso, explained the schedule of events and the legal requirements for the general election, for the benefit of electors nationwide.

In accordance with the Electoral Provision Act, Parliament shall resolve to recommend to the Governor General to dissolve Parliament next week during its last sitting. General Elections shall be held within three months after the dissolution of Parliament.

Polling day will be on September 9th 2019.
